Must-Have Mods For The Witcher

When a game like The Witcher is released most gamers are content and happy, they play the game – maybe they complete it – eventually they might play again; most will just forget about it; most will just move on to the next “great new game”. Then there exists a select few gamers who will stick at the same game for months, sometimes even years. To the ordinary caste of gamer these few are synonymous with the ‘Fan Boys’, yet those with sharper eyes and mind name them the ‘Modders’.

With The Witcher 2 using the Witcher saved games there has never been a better reason to reinstall the original game and give it a while. Though, of course, no game is perfect and while the Witcher is a fun game, there are still mods available which make it even better.

Nobody could take a look at Witcher mods without mentioning Andrzej Kwiatkowski’s Full Combat Rebalance. FCR, as it is commonly known, completely overhauls many aspects of the Witcher levelling and combat system turning it into a much more involving affair – including a new Sign. With FCR the difficulty is increased, so this mod is not for the faint hearted, but a greater reward is returned for those who use tactics.

With FCR covering 99% of all issues found with the Witcher game, we shall next take a look at a couple of vanity mods. The first is Flash’s Scabbard Mod. During the development of the Witcher, CD Projekt decided to scrap the usage of scabbard models due to clipping issue, this mod enables those models and adds a few more. During the installation this mod also has an option to install alongside FCR. This mod should be installed last.

Finally, while the Witcher is a fairly nice looking game it is starting to look dated. MasterOfDarkness created a very nice visual update mod, last year, that notches up the standard on over 3,000 textures. This mod is not recommended for those computers which do not surpass the game’s recommended requirements. This mod should be installed first.

Some games can live, or die, based on their modding community. Since the birth of the Elder Scroll franchise many fans have agreed that the original games are fairy standard, only through the skill and dedication of the modders has the game’s full potential been met. BioWare’s Neverwinter Nights still has a vibrant community today, despite the game being released eight years ago, this month. Neverwinter Nights, the Elder Scroll franchise any many other games live on well past their predicted lifespan thanks to the work of Modders.
